【Explained from a Craftsman's Perspective】Handmade Engagement Ring - Why You Can Take It Home the Same Day - A Close Look at One Day Until Completion -

0.5ct engagement ring

Why can MITUBACI engagement rings be taken home on the same day?

"I've decided to propose, but I don't have time to prepare the ring..." "I'm in trouble because I was told it would take 1〜2 months to order a ready-made product."

Such engagement rings that can be taken home on the same day are chosen by couples who are in a hurry to propose or who want to create a special memory together, MITUBACI's"Handmade engagement rings that can be taken home on the same day".

At typical jewelry shops, after selecting a design, the order is sent to the workshop, so it usually takes several weeks to several months for delivery.

On the other hand, at MITUBACI TOKYO, after customers create the base (arm) of the ring with their own hands in a workshop, skilled craftsmen immediately finish it and set the diamond (stone setting) on the spot.

This speed and high quality are possible because experienced craftsmen are always stationed in the workshop.

This time, from the ring-making process to the process of the craftsman setting the large diamond, we introduce the day the engagement ring is completed from the craftsman's perspective.

14:00 Store Visit・Design Decision

Mr. S visited us on this day. He came to handmake an engagement ring for his partner.

First, he decided on the design while consulting carefully with the craftsman, and then selected a diamond. We offer a wide range of diamond sizes: 0.1ct, 0.2ct, 0.3ct, 0.5ct, 0.7ct, and 1.0ct.

14:30 Ring Making Begins

Once the ring design and diamond were decided, production finally began. The craftsman provides one-on-one support. Since Mr. S chose hand-stamped engraving this time, we started with the process of stamping the engraving on a metal plate. (You can choose from three types of engravings: hand-stamped, machine engraved, or laser engraved, and all can be delivered on the same day.)

He engraved his own and his partner's initials, as well as ♡ and 🌸 motifs.

After the engraving was complete, the metal plate was rolled into a ring shape and proceeded to welding and size adjustment.

Then, it was carefully polished using various tools.

This time it's a simple plain texture, but designs with patterns made by hammer are also popular. (There are various other designs!)

The craftsman carefully explains each process, so even those who are not confident in detailed work are fine. You can practice stamping and hammer pattern-making in advance.

16:00 Arm Completed

The base of the ring (arm) is finally complete!

Next is the craftsman's diamond setting. It takes about 2 hours.

Since MITUBACI is very close to Sangenjaya Station, you can enjoy a walk or shopping during the waiting time. It would also be fun to discover delicious restaurants.

Stone Setting (Diamond Setting) in Close Detail!

Stone Seat Fixing

The diamond, the star of the engagement ring. From here, let's look at the process of "stone setting" which fixes a large diamond to the ring.

The pedestal part that supports the diamond is called the "stone seat." This stone seat is now attached to the arm.

First, we drill a hole in the center of the ring. The stone setting has a 0.7mm platinum core, so we carefully drill with a drill bit of matching size to ensure this core stands perfectly straight. Even a slight deviation in center position will affect the final appearance, so positioning is done with great care. We use a scribe to mark the center clearly, advance the drill bit slowly while opening the hole, and slightly adjust the surrounding area so the stone setting is stable.

Once the hole is drilled, we insert the core of the stone setting and adjust the angle. This is where we use a tool called a "temporary setting device." We check whether the stone setting and ring are standing vertically. Are the six prongs positioned correctly? Even the slightest tilt changes the impression, so we confirm from various angles. Rather than relying on our sense alone, we sometimes have other craftsmen review it as well, making fine adjustments in increments of 0.1mm.

Once the position is determined, we finally proceed to permanent fixing. We weld the stone setting and arm together.

We place a small metal chip (solder) at the joint between the stone setting and ring, then melt it by applying heat with a gas burner. If the solder is too large, it will overflow around the stone setting, so it's important to cut it small beforehand and determine the appropriate amount.

The moment we apply heat requires full attention. Even slight variations in how heat is applied can cause the position to shift slightly, so we keep our eyes on it until the end and make adjustments while monitoring.

Diamond Setting

Once the solder flows smoothly and the stone setting is fixed, we move to the next step: "stone fitting."

We measure the diamond's diameter with calipers and use tools to expand the center of the stone setting to fit that size perfectly. If it's too wide or too narrow, the diamond won't sit beautifully.

Once the diamond fits perfectly, the next step is the stone setting work—bending the prongs that will secure the diamond. Diamond setting is extremely delicate work where even errors of a few tenths of a millimeter are not permitted. Especially with large diamonds, even a slight tilt significantly affects the brilliance.

First, while looking through a microscope or magnifying glass, we fine-tune the angle so the diamond sits straight in the center of the ring at the optimal height.

Next, we use tools to bend down the prongs one by one. Rather than bending them all at once, we work on all six prongs in a balanced, alternating manner, a little at a time. If we don't apply force evenly, the diamond will tilt, so we proceed carefully and gradually. Since the prongs are initially too thick, once we've bent them to a certain degree, we polish them to shape. The key is to maintain sharpness while slightly rounding the corners to ensure wearing comfort—creating a finish that looks clean and beautiful yet has a soft quality.

We confirm that the prongs are completely bent and the diamond is secured firmly so it doesn't move.

We use a microscope or magnifying glass to check the entire piece for fine scratches or distortions, and once we polish everything thoroughly, it's finally complete!
